In late summer, 2002, I suggested to Caring Ministries Director Joan Deifell that we start a Prayer Shawl Ministry, modeled on one I had read about, which was held at St. Patrick St. Anthony Church in Hartford, where it had been started by two graduates of Hartford Seminary—Vicki Galo and Janet Bristow.

I contacted Janet and learned as much as I could about their program.

Joan was interested, but was even more excited about adding this new program when I told her I would be willing to run it. Her reaction was that rarely did someone suggest a new program and also volunteer to head it up!

Our first meeting was held in January 2003. We have about 10–12 knitters, some of them charter members.

We have given away hundreds of shawls, mainly to comfort those who are dealing with health or grief issues.

Some of our members even knit baby blankets as well. They are an amazing group.

Every monthly meeting begins with a Prayer of Blessing and usually includes a no-talking period of about ten minutes when, sometimes, we listen to inspirational music besides the sound of the needles. We close with a Prayer of Dedication, which is spoken over the finished shawls. At home, we pray privately over our knitting-sometimes quite specifically, if we know who the recipient will be.

We meet on the first Tuesday of the month, beginning on October 4, from 6:30–7:30 PM in the Morgan House Café.

We always welcome new knitters. The atmosphere is relaxed and peaceful, and while we knit,

we share stories, concerns, and joys.

If you are interested, please call me, Elaine at 860.529.7821, or just join us at a meeting.

I always feel uplifted by these wonderful women!
